Overview
Lineman Field Guide ("the app") is a reference and field tool for electrical linemen and cablemen. This policy describes what information the app collects, how it is used, and what choices you have. The short version: there is no account, nothing is tracked, and what you create stays on your phone.
What we collect
- No account. The app does not ask you to register or sign in. Nothing identifies you to the developer.
- No advertising and no third-party trackers. There is no ad network and no analytics SDK in the app, and nothing about you is sold or shared with anyone.
- No crash reporting. There is no crash-reporting or analytics library in the app. When a screen fails it is caught on the device and shown to you, and nothing is sent automatically. That screen offers to put the technical details into an email you can send if you want to — you see the whole message first, it contains nothing you typed and nothing that identifies you, and it only goes if you send it.
- Locally stored data. Job briefings, storm and pay records, apprentice hours, certification dates, saved calculator inputs, quiz progress and preferences are stored on the device using local storage (AsyncStorage). They are not uploaded.
When the app uses the network
The app works with no signal. Everything below happens only when you tap the thing that does it, and none of it sends an identifier:
- Weather and current conditions. Tapping *Fetch weather* or refreshing the conditions screen sends your coordinates to the National Weather Service (api.weather.gov) to look up the forecast for that grid point. The reading is cached on your phone so it can be shown again offline.
- Trade news. The news screen fetches headlines from each publisher's own public feed while you have it open. No account, no identifier, no record of what you read. Tapping a headline opens that publisher's page in your browser, under their privacy policy.
- OSHA text updates. *Check for updates* fetches the current regulation text from eCFR.
- Community study decks. Opening the community list downloads a public index file; installing a deck downloads that deck. Nothing about you is sent, and there is no account. Some builds have this switched off entirely and never contact the network for it.
Location, camera, photos and sensors
- Location is read only when you tap *Capture GPS* or ask for weather. Coordinates are stored in that job briefing on your phone, and are sent only to api.weather.gov if you ask for a forecast.
- The camera is used only while the photo-measurement or document-scanning tool is open, to take a picture you mark up on the device. Photos stay in the app's storage and are never uploaded.
- Motion sensors are read only while the sighting tool is open, to show tilt.
- Photos you attach to a briefing or a card stay on the phone.
None of these are accessed in the background.
Sharing and export
Exports — a job briefing PDF, an hours report, a scanned document, a backup file — go wherever you send them, using your phone's own share sheet. The app does not upload them and does not keep a copy anywhere else. A backup file contains your app data; restoring reads a file you choose. Neither goes anywhere the developer controls.
Data retention
Data stays on your device until you delete it in the app, clear the app's data, or uninstall. There is no server holding a copy, so there is nothing for the developer to retain or delete on your behalf.
Your choices
- Every reference, calculator and simulator feature works without providing any personal information.
- You can decline location and camera permissions and keep using everything else; the features that need them will say so.
- There is no crash reporting or analytics to opt out of, because none is collected.
Children's privacy
This app is intended for professional and apprentice electrical lineworkers and is not directed at children under 13.
